Hurricane Preparedness and U
By Amber Robertson posted Aug 29, 2010 at 11:45 AM

WVUM listeners can be found all over the world, but the majority can be found right here in south Florida. While living in paradise has its obvious perks, it also means that there is a risk of hurricanes for 6 months out of the year. Hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, and in an effort to keep listeners prepared and informed, WVUM is kicking off the fall semester week with a focus on Hurricane preparedness.

WVUM

Keep any ear out for an interview with Gilbert Arias, the Vice President of Student affairs at the University of Miami. He gave us some enlightening tips about staying safe before, during, and after a storm. Arias stressed the importance of being prepared at the beginning of hurricane season. This includes having all of the supplies that you might need, and having a plan of action during the storm. For this reason, WVUM has prepared a downloadable checklist that condenses all the information into one easy document. Stay safe this hurricane season, and as always, keep it locked!

REMINDERS FOR STUDENTS:
1. Update MyUm storm preferences. On the MyUM homepage, locate the “Personal and Biographical Info” section in the right-hand column. Click on the “Personal, Address and Emergency/Storm Information” link. Update your cellular telephone number, your preferred mailing address, your home address and home telephone numbers, and your permanent address and telephone number. At the bottom, find the section: Emergency and Storm Preparedness Information and don’t forget to provide an out of town contact.
2. Know the important Hurricane Hotline number: 305-284-5151 to find out about closures, openings, updates.
3. UM Police number: 305-284-6666
4. Know the central source for all official info: Miami.edu/prepare

More important phone numbers are found here.

Faux Pas Interview
By Laura (of Miami) Sutnick posted Aug 24, 2010 at 10:44 AM

Faux Pas is one of our MEDIUM ROTATION artists, which means their music gets played pretty frequently on air. Check out the interview on the NIGHTDRIVE blog:

I’ve been chatting with Tim from Faux Pas (Australia) for the last few weeks via email and we’ve finally conjured up an interview for you guys. He initially approached me about submitting his music to college radio, but to his surprise we already had his stuff in the WVUM 90.5 FM library (keep it locked! wink ). Some call his style dream pop and others say it’s more on the disco side. I say let’s not put him in a box. Here’s my favorite press quote about him:

“Impressive elastic strands of plaited sense associations; extract of flashy disco, pastoral swoon and computer exploration.” – threethousand
