Amber on a bike
By Amber Robertson posted Sep 26, 2010 at 11:22 PM

So for one of my classes we have to create a 4 minute television news story. Our topic: cycling in Miami. We thought this would be interesting since Miami-Dade was recently voted the worst place in Miami for cyclists. We got in touch with Kathryn Moore, Executive Director of the South Florida Bike Coalition, a group that advocates for safe and fair transportation laws in South Florida. As part of the story, we also covered Critical Mass (the organized bike ride that leaves from Government Center the last Friday of every month). I thought it would be cool to actually hop on a bike and ride Critical Mass, since it's something I've been wanting to do. Kathryn put me in touch with Colby, at Deco Bike, South Beach's new public transportation program that lets you rent bikes. These new bike rental stations are being put in South beach in November and allow for an alternative to taking a cab or walking. It is ideal for a 15 minute ride, allowing you to leave the bike at the next station you find and pick up another when you want. Colby lent me a demo Deco Bike to ride for Critical Mass and it was so great! Can't wait to see these spring up on the beach!

Gigamesh on Electric Kingdom! Thursday September 30 from 7-9pm
By Amber Robertson posted Sep 25, 2010 at 10:32 PM

At his senior trombone recital in college, Gigamesh performed songs by Aphex Twin, Leonard Bernstein, The Bad Plus, John Coltrane and Portishead.  At the time, he was also drumming in a grindcore metal band entirely themed on the writing of Philip K. Dick.  Throughout his childhood, he was producing hip-hop and dance beats based on samples taken from whatever albums he could find at the public library.  He has always believed that music should have no boundaries, good is good and music is for happiness.

Catch the live DJ set on Thursday September 30 from 7-9pm. Stream online or live on 90.5FM. Hosted by Amber

Interview: Ninjasonik tonight at 7pm!
By Giovanna Stallings-Blanche posted Sep 25, 2010 at 05:00 PM

Check out what the Miami New Times had to say about their show tonight:

"Well, bro, you need to get off that jaded hipster ish because these three cross-genre scientists are the real deal. Whether you're talking singles such as "Ha Ha Ha," "Somebody Gon Get Pregnant," or "Internet Bitch," Jah-Jah, Telli, and Roofeeo keep it street while still weirding out. They throw down deep, druggy beats. They chop up samples with a samurai sword. They spit lazy, crazy rhymes like there's something stuck in their teeth.

Basically, the members of the Ninjasonik crew live by a code of everything goes — grabbing liberally from, as their own hype says, "Slick Rick and the Sex Pistols" to pound out a pure and vicious pop-rap-punk mashup of awesomely uneven proportions. It's a throwback thing. It's an evolved experiment. It's all about dumb fun and civil disobedience.

And what? You're gonna dis it, bro? Stop posing; let's party."
