Cool Things about this Week /// June 7th

By Giovanna Stallings-Blanche posted Jun 07, 2010 at 08:15 PM

We are starting a weekly run through of some events on this blog right here.  This is the first ever. Expect this to get better (maybe). Click here for full story.

As you may or may not know, WVUM likes to highlight events happening around Miami that we think are fun / cool / interesting / on air / pretty / crazy / tasty / free or cheap / worth talking about / maybe not mentioned enough. So, to make this make more sense we are starting a weekly run through of some events on this blog right here.  This is the first ever. Expect this to get better (maybe).

Our Events Calendar is awesome, check it on our main page.

p.s. - Yeasayer on October 5th at the Fillmore—we already have tickets (because we on that)! Stay tuned for giveaways.

ART: 20(12): Twenty Twelve - Group Exhibition
at Miami Art Space

Twelve artists from Miami will inaugurate an exhibition at Miami Art Space June 12 to offer predictions, guesses and feelings about the year 2012. The exhibition 2012 was organized by Miami painter Kiki Valdes. The inauguration is scheduled to run from 6 to 11 p.m. at 244, Northwest 35th Street, Miami. Included in the group exhibition are artists: Reinier Gamboa; Kiki Valdes; David Tamargo; George Sanchez-Calderon; David Marsh; Brian Gefen; John Sevigny; Raul Perdomo; Alvaro Ilizabe; Eric Torriente; and Oliver Sanchez. “Everything ties back to the number 12,” organizer Kiki Valdes said. “June 12th, 2012, 12 artists.”

244 NW 35th Street, in Wynwood

ART: Kris Knight: “A Deadly Nightshade”

This is Kris Knight’s second solo show at the SPINELLO GALLERY, and features oil paintings that depart from his usual portraiture. “A safe haven for rural misfits, Knight’s latest paintings revolve around a narrative of a romantic secret society. Drawing upon personal stories, his luminous characters depict an alchemy of the imagination, attempting to transcend the tedium of small town life for the enigmatic depths of a nocturnal forest.” Knight often explores issues of androgyny and youth in a modern yet quaint way.

ART: So Raw Store Opening

The cool girls behind local booking / fun / drinking organization So Raw and cool girl Nektar de Stagni -fashion + jewelry designer /director of NDS Shop / DJ Faux Real - team up to deliver the So Raw concept store inside of NDS Shop. The So Raw Store features “everything you’ll ever need.” Hence, hair spray that will encourage clients to pay you, cigarettes, Bustelo Coffee brewed on location, vinyl from Florida’s Dying, Captured Tracks, and more. Also available is merchandise by FREEGUMS, Nektar de Stagni, University of Wynwood (consider study abroad programs there), Borsht Film Festival, Gabriel from the Jacuzzi Boys, and maybe even your favorite radio station. And FREE STUFF.

Speaking of FREE STUFF, since the store opening is conveniently during Art Walk where any open container laws are ignored, you should let them extort you for FREE BEER + VODKA. This also means that there will be an art installation by Autumn Casey involved,  but I don’t like to talk about art.
