INTERVIEW: Gold Coast Derby on Amber Alert!

By Amber Robertson posted Sep 14, 2011 at 09:11 AM

Tune in to Amber Alert today at 5pm for a special interview with members of the Gold Coast Derby Grrls! Roller derby is a full-contact sport played on quad-roller skates that involve 5 players from two opposing teams on the track at a time. This video will tell you more!

We will be interviewing Tsunami Tsue (player, coach & captain), Bear Lee Human (coach) and Dr. Psycho Cub (referee). Friday at 7PM the Grrls take on the Gainesville Roller Rebels at the Bank United Center!

According to referee Chris Larkin, "Gold Coast Derby Grrls has had a Cinderella story this past year.  Last year a referee close to the team died of a health complications, the league graduated WFTDA apprenticeship, made a huge jump in rankings, and on the same day they found out they were invited to regionals they were notified that their home rink and primary practice space - Gold Coast Skating Rink - was being demolished in a week. The sudden surprise could not have come at a worse time. This dramatically increased the league's operating costs for practice space, which is jeopardizing funding to playoffs.  The league needs to be able to afford to send 26 people including players, coaches, referees, and support staff for five days to Kansas City.  This is why the bout on Friday against Gainesville at the BankUnited Center on the UofM campus is so critical. It will determine the feasibility and affordability of going to regionals.  Also to help assist sending the league to playoffs they have setup a Honeyfund.com website with information available on their FaceBook or website:www.goldcoastderbygrrls.com (note that 'girls' is spelled 'grrls').  Mainly though, we want people to come experience roller derby first hand at the BankUnited Center on Friday at 7PM!"
