Look Out 2014: Music

By WVUM DJ posted Feb 15, 2014 at 08:25 PM

Music Directors Jarryd and Natasha share their most anticipated music releases of 2014!

Natasha recommends:

DENA -- Flash

Released: March 3

I first heard of this Bulgarian rapper while fanatically searching for videos of Whitest Man’s Alive’s Erlend Øye (aka the most beautiful man in the world). He appears dancing in DENA’S "Cash, Dimamond Rings, Swimming Pools". Since then, I started following her releases, which has been sporadic tracks and mixes such as my personal favorite “High On Hi Hats Mixtape”. Finally, she is releasing an album entitled Flash. Keep your eyes peeled for this groovy chick.

Metronomy – Love Letters

Released: March 10

Following up their 2011 album The English Riviera, Metronomy shall be releasing Love Letters soon! They have been transitioning from their first two albums Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe) and Nights Out, which are a lot more instrumental, to their richer sound of funky sax and subtle vocals. Let’s hope Love Letters continues this vein. They announced their album release date along with the song "I'm Aquarius". Miami’s own Panic Bomber also made a remix of it, in which he declares he is a Taurus.

Kimbra – TBA

Released: TBA

This might be a little too soon for any list, but I don’t care. Judging from Kimbra’s Instagram, she just finished working on her new album. I have not heard much about it other than it is rumored to be a “back-to-roots” album, which will probably be soul-tastic. I know she also has been working with Dilinger Escape Plan, so hopefully they make an appearance on the album.

St. Vincent – St. Vincent

Released: February 24

Back from her musical rendez-vous with David Byrne, St. Vincent is set to release her fourth studio album. Based off of the two songs she has already released “Birth in Reverse” and “Digital Witness”, Ms. Clark is continuing her fuzzy girl power tunes for all of us to enjoy.

Lykke Li  -- TBA

Released: May

Our Swedish songstress is set to finish up what she considers her musical trilogy. She told NME that it will be about break up, so if you’re feeling heart broken around May, your soul will surely be soothed thanks to Lykke.

Azealia Banks – Broke with Expensive Taste

Released: March

The controversial rap star will FINALLY release her first studio album. I feel like I have been waiting my entire life for this moment. With singles such as Yung Rapunxel and ATM Jam (in which the Kaytranada remix is by far the best) I am super excited for Banks to continue to show us her quick wit and never ending charm.

Grimes – TBA

Released: September

Our Canadian fave Clair Boucher just recently signed with Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation and leaked via Twitter that she will release her album Sept 9 “she thinks.” Let’s see what collabs are in store for this one!

Rodrigo Y Gabriela – 9 Dead Alive

Released: April 28

This astounding acoustic guitar duo will be releasing their fifth studio album 9 Dead Alive. I was not particularly interested in Area 52,  but their third album 11:11 is by far my favorite from them. Let’s hope this group revives that amount of strength and energy again.

Jarryd recommends:

Dum Dum Girls ~ Too True

Released: January 22

Ok. Another full disclosure: I love Dee Dee Penny. And therefore I am obligated to love everything she puts out. And much like The Lego Movie, I’ve already listened to this album. After three albums and just as many EPs, Too True is Dum Dum Girls best effort to date.

St. Vincent ~ St. Vincent

Released: January 25

Say what you want about Love This Giant (only good things, I hope), Strange Mercy was probably my favorite album of 2011. So am I super excited for St. Vincent’s brass-less follow-up? You best believe I am!

Kanye West ~ TBA

Released: TBA

As Kanye himself has said, he “is a God.” And as a full-fledged devotee in the Church of Yeezus, I will listen to whatever he puts out. And 5/6 times, its amazing.

Jarryd is also hype for:

Mastodon’s TBA, Schoolboy Q’s Oxymoron, The New Pornographers’ TBA, Charli xcx’s TBA, & Com Truise’s Wave 1 EP.
