Rich H’s Pick of the Week #2 2-4-2014 | Magic Man - You Are Here EP

By Richard Hankins posted Feb 04, 2014 at 01:41 PM

They describe themselves as “A triumphant synth rock band from Boston, MA.  Magic Man is Alex, Daniel, Joey, Justine, and Sam.”   Quoted from their Bandcamp page, Magic Man released their debut EP, You Are Here, on September 13th, 2013. Though yes, I am late in writing them up, I think they deserve all the press they can get, because their music is filled with energy and passion that are rivaled by few in the synth-pop scene today.  Before You are Here, Alex and Sam, the founding members, released a self-produced album, Real Life Color, in 2010, slowly garnering attention from popular blogs including: All Things Go, Pitchfork, and Pigeons and Planes.  But this EP is their first studio effort, and the sound they have created is astounding.

“Texas”, the lead track of the EP  opens with the sample “You are about to embark on the most wonderful experience of your life…” before cutting into an explosion of synths ripped from the 80s, and injected with huge amounts of energy that leaves everyone nodding their heads and dancing on the floor.  The second song, “Paris”, slows it down, trapping a more heartfelt, wistful vibe to the song, with a simple piano faintly reminiscing an old polka dance, complemented by more wonderful synths to drive the song forward.  “Every Day”, is airy and lighthearted, a perfect fit for a playlist to take to South Beach.  Closing off the EP, “Nova Scotia” and “Waves” are laid back and easy to listen to, filled with ostinatos to drive the music and keep your head nodding.  Pay close attention to Magic Man, but with their infectious synth pop, it’s going to be hard not to.
