My Journey to Restore Sanity and/or Fear: The Prequel
By Kathleen Elise posted Oct 27, 2010 at 08:05 PM

The New York Times devoted eight clues to it in Tuesday's crossword puzzle. Oprah gave Jon Stewart's audience free tickets to it. Even President Obama has endorsed it. After much anticipation, the Washington Mall will be overrun this Saturday at noon with Stewart and Steven Colbert fans alike at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. When my best friend, who goes to school in New Jersey, offered to take me to the rally this weekend, I jumped at the opportunity. It was the sane thing to do.

Critical Mass Halloween
By posted Oct 25, 2010 at 02:06 PM

The last Friday of every month is a cyclist’s delight.  Critical Mass is an unofficial bike ride in Miami that is devoted to the celebration of bicycles.  Anyone who is willing and able is welcome to join on the monthly ride.  Sometimes you may find the occasional skateboarder or rollerblader among the mass, but for the most part a massive amount of bicycles will take to the streets for an evening of fun.

While all are encouraged to participate, safety is a huge priority in the ride.  Riders are encouraged to cooperate with drivers, not to antagonize them.  The group utilizes a technique called corking to protect ride members from possible car dangers.  Corking can be explained as using bikes as barriers to allow ride members to pass by without being interrupted by drivers.  It usually only causes a few minutes delay to the drivers and is essential to the safety of the riders.

Restaurant Review: Green Gables Café
By posted Oct 19, 2010 at 02:48 PM

For vegetarians eating out with friends who eat meat could mean sitting at a steakhouse picking at a salad and a side of french fries. Hardly the kind of nourishment a non-meat eater needs.  But now there is a place where compassionate eaters and the health conscientious can dine in delight, together.

Green Gables Café opened in October of 2007. New and small, patrons walked into the café for lunch and would scrunch up to the counter to place their order. But this didn’t discourage them from returning. The regulars kept coming back and people looking for some place new to grab a bite could mosey in. All organic and eco-friendly, with meat and vegetarian options newcomers often raise their eyebrows. Skeptics were quickly converted.

OF POLITICAL INTEREST
By Amber Robertson posted Oct 14, 2010 at 08:56 AM

Say what? Sounds like a heated debate is about to be among us!

"Mark Penn, worldwide CEO of Burson-Marsteller, a leading global public relations and communications firm, and a former chief adviser to President Bill Clinton, and Karen Hughes, global vice chair of Burson-Marsteller who served as counselor to President George W. Bush, will speak at UM on Monday, October 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Storer Auditorium."

Students will have the opportunity to ask them questions as well.
