Restaurant Review: Green Gables Café
By posted Oct 19, 2010 at 02:48 PM

For vegetarians eating out with friends who eat meat could mean sitting at a steakhouse picking at a salad and a side of french fries. Hardly the kind of nourishment a non-meat eater needs.  But now there is a place where compassionate eaters and the health conscientious can dine in delight, together.

Green Gables Café opened in October of 2007. New and small, patrons walked into the café for lunch and would scrunch up to the counter to place their order. But this didn’t discourage them from returning. The regulars kept coming back and people looking for some place new to grab a bite could mosey in. All organic and eco-friendly, with meat and vegetarian options newcomers often raise their eyebrows. Skeptics were quickly converted.

OF POLITICAL INTEREST
By Amber Robertson posted Oct 14, 2010 at 08:56 AM

Say what? Sounds like a heated debate is about to be among us!

"Mark Penn, worldwide CEO of Burson-Marsteller, a leading global public relations and communications firm, and a former chief adviser to President Bill Clinton, and Karen Hughes, global vice chair of Burson-Marsteller who served as counselor to President George W. Bush, will speak at UM on Monday, October 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Storer Auditorium."

Students will have the opportunity to ask them questions as well.

Coral Gables Art Cinema
By Amber Robertson posted Oct 13, 2010 at 02:03 PM

If you feel like Miami has no cool new places to see a movie you are wrong! The Coral Gables Art Cinema opens this Friday the 15th with a special opening night event premiere of Freakonomics. You can catch two show times on October 15- 7pm and 9pm. The opening night is a fundraising event, with tickets at $100 (available online). Don't be stingy! Non-profits who work hard to bring you alternative entertainment are always worth it wink If you're a student at UM, consider the theatre for your movie-watching, as it is very close to campus (right off Miracle Mile).

Freakonomics will play for two weeks with varied screening times & the Cinema will be open 7 days a week, year round from then on. Look for movie times at wvum.org in the future. We will be working with the cinema director, Robert Rosenberg, who was the founding director of the Miami Gay and Lesbian FIlm Festival.

Climate Change AWARENESS
By Bobby Goldfin posted Oct 12, 2010 at 06:06 PM

Check out this cool video- It highlights how climate change is impacting people at home and abroad, and was produced by Oxfam America, a tax-exempt humanitarian organization that works towards lasting solutions to poverty in more than 90 countries around the world. Oxfam is part of the massive 350.org coalition taking action on climate change.

Climate change will continue take center stage in international policy, especially during the UN Climate Summit in Cancun this November and December, where Oxfam is asking world leaders to invest in the resilience of vulnerable communities around the world and work towards a global deal on climate change.

Cool Things /// October 7th
By Giovanna Stallings-Blanche posted Oct 06, 2010 at 08:02 PM

This is cool!

I know that this exact video has been previously mentioned on a "Cool things" entry, but now it is on the side of the AAA. Art projected on the side of the AAA is cool! There are no specific rules to what is "cool" on my entries, and if there are I made them, and there is a "break the rule for cool things" clause.

Also, see you all at the Fillmore for LCD Soundsystem very soon + the afterparties! Can a girl dream that the special guest DJ at the Florida Room might be Juan Maclean, Shit Robot or Lee Douglas? I hope, gods of the OVERTHROW.
