La Roux Concert Review
By Laura (of Miami) Sutnick posted Nov 03, 2010 at 03:30 PM

WVUM can undeniably claim to be the first to play La Roux on the Miami airwaves. I remember putting her debut album into heavy rotation a couple of years back and telling our GM "this one's gonna be big". So when late spring/ early summer came along and word got out that she would be playing Ft. Lauderdale in August I almost crapped my janks. Then August came around and unfortunately she had to cancel a huge part of her U.S. tour due to illness. No worries though, Eleanor (her full name) re-scheduled for early November giving her plenty of time to soak into the mainstream airwaves and allowing tickets to recirculate throughout the secondary market.  I was fortunate enough to catch her at Coachella although her performance caused a stampede, which made me feel like I was about to get crushed by masses of sweaty hipsters. So, waiting for a more intimate performance at the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale was no big whoop.

The first opening band was our own Panic Bomber who's androgynous look and banger sound got the crowd excited from the get go (especially the Wilton Manner boys). He added a fantastic horn section to his performance along with a super sassy leathered up backgroud vocalist. Next on the bill was Francis & The Lights... I was severely impressed, the New York duo sounded much better live than any of their recordings. Francis Farewell Starlite's voice has a remarkable resemblence to Phil Collins and his on stage energy caused a crowd full of bobbing heads.

Then came La Roux. Finally after so much anticipation. Her band looked impecable and I almost fell in love with the drummer (almost). "Tigerlily" was the first song on the list which coincidentally is my personal fav so I was thrilled as soon as I heard the first few bars. The set was short but every single song was delivered with great enthusiasm and charisma. The sound was tight, the crowd was ecstatic, and Elly looked like she was having a great time. At one point while scaling a ledge on the front of the stage she claimed "Americans make Brits look like assholes". I'm sure you can imagine the crowd's reaction.

Check out a video of the show
