Win CMJ Passes and Join the Ranks of Music Journalism With WVUM's Writing Contest

By S. Pajot

"Everybody wants to be a rock star. But eventually you realize that playing power chords, drinking gallons of Jack Daniel's for breakfast, and slutting it up with groupies of every sex (yes, there are more than two) is a totally ridiculous way to make a living. Sure, it pays hella well (roughly $1,000,000,000,000 per year), but who's gonna take you seriously when you're wearing ladies' clothes at 62 like Steven Tyler?

Your solution: Join the ranks of music journalism. But how do you weasel your way onto the scene? Win WVUM's CMJ Concert Review Contest. It doesn't pay, but you'll get a couple of pretty awesome CMJ passes out of it.

Quick! See the cut for details."

INTERVIEW: Mayer Hawthorne, Friday, 7pm
By Giovanna Stallings-Blanche posted Sep 29, 2010 at 09:03 PM

Amber takes on the man with the falsetto.

+ he will be playing at Culture Room this Sunday night with his band, the County. Ticket giveaways on air all week.

"Hawthorne has produced and played instruments for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. He isn’t formally trained, and never sang in the church choir or in any of the bands he was in before founding the County (formerly the County Commissioners). But here he is, new school soul sensation, who has taken the Motown assembly-line production model and eliminated nearly every element but himself and a few hired hands. “I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs,” says Peanut Butter Wolf. “Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.”

Amber on a bike
By Amber Robertson posted Sep 26, 2010 at 11:22 PM

So for one of my classes we have to create a 4 minute television news story. Our topic: cycling in Miami. We thought this would be interesting since Miami-Dade was recently voted the worst place in Miami for cyclists. We got in touch with Kathryn Moore, Executive Director of the South Florida Bike Coalition, a group that advocates for safe and fair transportation laws in South Florida. As part of the story, we also covered Critical Mass (the organized bike ride that leaves from Government Center the last Friday of every month). I thought it would be cool to actually hop on a bike and ride Critical Mass, since it's something I've been wanting to do. Kathryn put me in touch with Colby, at Deco Bike, South Beach's new public transportation program that lets you rent bikes. These new bike rental stations are being put in South beach in November and allow for an alternative to taking a cab or walking. It is ideal for a 15 minute ride, allowing you to leave the bike at the next station you find and pick up another when you want. Colby lent me a demo Deco Bike to ride for Critical Mass and it was so great! Can't wait to see these spring up on the beach!
