#Cold Wave

Monday, January 21, 2013

by Julia Webster

Coldwave is a French variant of post-punk, dark wave music that was most popular around France, South Belgium and Romandy. The genre was inspired by post-punk groups like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Divison. In 1977 Siouxsie and the Banshees described their music as “Cold, machine-like, and passionate at the same time” and Sounds magazine ran off that and said “listen to the cold wave roar from the ’70s into the ’80s.”

The Scream (Siouxsie and the Banshees first album) was viewed as one of the first coldwave albums, released in 1978, along with Joy Division’s track Digital produced by Martin Hannett for a compilation album released the same year.

Some of the forerunners of the coldwave scene in include early French punk rock groups like Stinky Toys, Métal Urbain, and The Opposition. Although French, a bunch of these artists sang in English, but most of them emerged in the early 80’s.
