#Folktronica

Monday, January 28, 2013

by Julia Webster

Folktronica (also known as electrofolk) is a genre of music that fuses elements of acoustic folk music and ambient electronica (as the name would suggest) as well as psychedelia and jazz. Most of the music is made by sampling and looping acoustic instruments, like the guitar, and rearranging it in editing programs like Abelton, so the genre is also referred to as laptop folk. A lot of the tracks can be kinda long cause artists try to let the song mature naturally, if that makes any sense to you. Like a jazz song might do. Also, on the topic of jazz, a typical folktronica song has the same structure as jazz does. Another prominent detail of the music is heavy layering which builds as the song goes on. The moods usually sticks to a folky theme.

Since the genre exploded, some awesome albums have come out to really give the scene a name. Four Tet is this awesome artist I found in my research of folktronica. Not all of his music falls under the name, but his album Rounds is sometimes noted as a focal point of folktronica and is probably the most popular folktronica album. Kieran Hebden, who is Four Tet, was quoted in an article about folktronica on the BBC website in 2003 said “Anyone with good idea and enough heart to tell the purists to f**k off can breath new life into fold music.” he said the music is supposed to look forwards, not backwards. Another artist I’m gonna play is Momus who came out with this album called “folktronica” that deliberately explored and kiiiinda made fun of the fusion.

This is that Four Tet guy indulging in some lovely looking grub.

“All music is Folk music. I aint never hear a horse sing no song.” - Louis Armstrong
