From the Garage #4 - Hard Acousticore

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

by Chris Palowitch

Listen here! -

D&J’s Holiday Special - Aint She Fine

-          Landing of the Bumblebee

Derek and Josh + others. Hilarious stuff, maybe cause I know them. But having a good time, and that’s what it’s about.

Youth Avoiders - Wild Ones

-          Casting Lots

First overseas band, from France! Sounds so raw and awesome and not stale. Toured twice in the US, once with a American bands and another with a French band. Tours coming up and 7” EP in June.

LA Beard Club - Everything We Do

-          If You Give Me A Chance

Released on a compilation my band was on and I didn’t even know it. Name from back when beards weren’t popular, so Daniel started a beard club in LA. Writes music when he’s feeling down, makes him feel better, and hopes his music helps other get through tough times.

Sleepwalk - Dreaming of a California Sun

-          Your Move

-          When Things Get Rough

Impulse – Backbreaker/Bane

-          Ice Control

-          Pile

-          Lying

-          Spare

-          Acting

Chula Vista Hardcore. Missed them this summer at a super-secret late night baseball field show, still bummed. Shares members with Impulse, split coming out soon featuring the two bands.

Basement – Fish Shop (Demo)

I actually forgot to contact them, but I’ll make sure to have some info up on them soon. Really, lots of acoustic/experimental music out there that’s valuable to listen to, definitely one example of such a group.

Indian Taker – Growing Feigns

-          Foxholes

Said to say punk band from Northern California, but I would say epic punk. Met while recording for my band. Never listened until very recently, blown away. Recording new album in May and touring western United States in July.

Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra – Booger Storm

-          101 N

-          Howl (Clean)

Saw with Hemingway in friend’s backyard in summer. Wasn’t full band, but still awesome. Like to say bunch of kids who played punk and metal music in junior high but realized they were too suburban to ever be that legit. Do a lot of different things in Making New Enemies, zines, photo, etc.

Assumptions – On the Playground

-          Speech

Saw their last show over winter break. Trevor, lead singer, did one of the best performances I’ve ever seen…he also brought a grenade to the show.

Pageripper – Collarblind

-          Rex Goliath

Played a show with them bringing in new year. Just as tight live as they are on their recordings, not necessarily true for many bands. “We record everything themselves and play louder than your band”. Very true.

B-ride – Signs

-          Swollen

Beginning to forget how I find out about artists, but doesn’t matter too much cause it’s good music. Two guys, Brian and Pele. Record everything themselves, listen to more tracks to hear the variety of instruments. Also in a funk-ska-jazz band called Tootles Monsters which plays in Long Island sometime.

Bad Guys – Living Straight

-          Heavy Hitters

Friend Brandon shared these guys and I dunno, just really like their sound. Unfortunately broke up a little while ago, so probably no more from them.

Go Deep – Leave.

-          Lockout

Started working at the Talent Farm, an awesome DIY venue up in Pembroke Pines. Played the first gig I worked, killer live show. Has a lot of stuff to say. Definitely worth checking out musically and philosophically.

Zack England – Meltdown

-          Fuck ‘em all, Sleep til Noon

Saw in same backyard as Walter Mitty, but had no idea I played with him before. Singer for the first alternative band I played with in middle school, All Walks of Life. Hopefully play them in future. Anyways, Zack has one of the best voices I’ve heard and nicest dudes. New tracks by the end of winter.

Unity Rise – Losing My Mind

-          Which Side Are You On?

Sent in from South Florida. Good combo between acoustic and hardcore. Folk punk, friend said a little bluegrass in there. Love the sound of the vocals against the instrumentals. Also says things to think about.

Watercolor Paintings – Snail

Josh from Cave Babies and his sister Rebecca. Just as good as Cave Babies which is amazing. Everything they have is worth listening to.

Hounds of Hate – Pound of Flesh

-          Clean Today

Just recently went on tour with Zero Progress. Straight Edge, so I think they have good things to say. Working on 2nd LP as we speak, but that’s about it for them.

Addam Chavarria – Good Bye

Annie Singer. Great voice, vibe. Seems like it’s genuine, especially after briefly exchanging emails with him. Good song to end with.
