Isolationism is a style of dark ambient music that came around in the 90's. Isolationism, was a Virgin compilation and it needed some sort of marketing angle. The term was first introduced to the public in 1993 in an article for The Wire magazine. The guy who wrote it, Kevin Martin described it as ambient music's "antisocial cousin". If it wasn't for that guy, I'm pretty sure the genre would have gone unnoticed.
You can attribute the origins of isolationism in early industrial music, krautrock (that genre that came out of Germany in the 60's that gave rise to ambient, electronic and post-punk music) and weird experimental composers like John Cage.
For those of you who are into Brian Eno, you can thank him for having probably the greatest influence on the isolationism scene
Isolationism contains weird unfinished loops, is essentially rhythmless, and it lacks any energizing crescendos. It's not sounding too appealing by I really enjoy this genre.
