Electroclash is a genre that first got media attention in 2001 when an electroclash festival was held in New York. It essentially fuses New Wave and electronic dance music. The sound was inspired by New Wave and modern art and uses a lot of synthesized pop sounds. It developed as a response against current electronic music and sometimes artists would perform in art galleries instead of traditional clubs. The visual aesthetics of electroclash has been associated with the 1982 film Liquid Sky, a cult classic directed by Russian director Slava Tsukerman. The basic premise of the movie is there are these invisible aliens in a tiny flying saucer come to Earth looking for heroin and so they land in New York and they find this drug dealer who has this really crazy looking, androgynous, bisexual nymphomaniac, fashion model girl friend. And these aliens find out that human pheromones are better than heroine so they start harvesting this nymphomaniac girl's random hookups for their pheromones. Some cool dark humor and really strange and has great visual aesthetics.

The term was coined by Larry Tee who's this promoter, DJ and producer. He was also the same guy who made RuPaul famous, if you've ever seen RuPaul's Drag Race show, you know what I'm talking about. This guy also got people like Scissor Sisters and Peaches.

Anyways, some of the artists who were known for making the original electroclash sound were Fisherspooner, Peaches, Miss Kitten, and The Hacker. Tiga is actually considered the Electroclash poster boy. He covered the song “Sunglasses at Night” with Zyntherious and basically became the song defining the electroclash movement. In an interview with CMJ, Tiga admitted to his song probably being the electroclash anthem along with the song “Emerg” by Fisherspooner. While Tiga is considered the poster boy, I-F came out with the song "Space Invaders are Smoking Grass" in 1997 which supposedly pioneered the entire movement.
