Counterpoint May 1st

This week, we started by talking about Bernie Sanders throwing his hat into the ring for 2016, discussing his viability and relative odds in taking on the almost-shoe-in Hillary Clinton in the primaries, and how he would do on the national stage. We then moved to the botched death penalty case before the Supreme Court. We had a flurry of text-ins, so we spent more time than intended talking about it– always a good thing! We covered the death penalty quite thoroughly, from the specific instances of “how to kill someone humanely” whether by drugs or bullet, to the concept of capital punishment in general. Instead of talking about the Iran deal or gay marriage case, we ended by talking about the newly-renamed Donna E. Shalala Student Center (formerly just the “Student Activities Center”– ‘SAC for short). As always, catch a replay after the break. Keep it locked.

This week, we continued the passing of the torch to David, the next host of Counterpoint! We started by talking about Obama’s revelation that two Americans and an Italian hostage were killed a few months back in a drone strike in Pakistan. We then moved to discussing the Lynch nomination. We ended by talking about the break-up of the Comcast-Time Warner merger and what the deal’s collapse means for the economics of the cable and Internet service industries.

This week, we started with round two of the 2016 entrants: Rubio and Clinton, highlighting their strengths and perceived weaknesses. We joined the rest of our student media in covering Julio Frenk’s appointment to head The U following Shalala’s departure and shared our hopes for what type of impact he will have on both academics and sports– he certainly has some big shoes to fill in regards to both! We ended by speculating which 2016 hopefuls would announce next and comparing our dream tickets. As always, hit the jump after the break to catch a replay. Keep it locked.

This week, we started with a lively debate on 2016′s newest entrant (and one of my personal heroes): Rand Paul! We’d be remiss to focus on one candidate, so we surveyed the field as well, touching on notables such as Cruz and Clinton. After speculation on 2016, we moved to our other topic: discussing the possibility of Cuba being taken off the state sponsors of terror list. We had quite a large cast in the studio this week, so we chose only two topics to accommodate. As always, catch a replay after the break. Keep it locked.

Counterpoint April 3rd: With Special Guests David, Will, and Vinny!

This week, we had not one, not two, not even three, but four special additions to today’s show. Vinny “the Voice of Reason” used to host Counterpoint back in the day, Will was a long-time Counterpointer who graduated last year, and David joined us to fill the “middle” part of the political spectrum. Our fourth VIP was the next host of Counterpoint! David Silverman was able to make it out and take the first step towards taking over– co-hosting! I’d be remiss to forget Rachel, one of our regulars: she was only able to make part of the show, but we were still thrilled to have her, as always.

We started by talking about the Iran deal framework and the impact the final deal will have on the Middle East. We then moved to the Menendez charges and other recent corruption-related cases. We finished by talking about criminal justice reform and the event Vinny’s organization (Generation Opportunity) is hosting this Thursday at the FIU Kovens Center. We had a good discussion on the over-criminalization present in the American legal system of non-violent crimes, specifically in relation to over-codification, minimum sentences, financial crimes, and even police interactions with their local communities.

Good thing we record all our shows: this is one you definitely don’t want to miss! As always, you can catch a replay after the break. Keep it locked.

This week, we started by talking about Ted Cruz’s candidacy announcement before wandering into minimum wage for a bit. We then moved to discussing the Indiana religious freedom bill before moving on to the Iran deal and finishing with a quick discussion on Ultra.

As always: hit the jump after the break to catch a replay. Keep it locked.

This week, we talked about Netanyahu’s speech to Congress and about Israeli relations in general and even a bit of Middle East politics. Then we moved to talking about the Clinton email scandal, and even though we invited Mrs. Clinton onto the show (she was on-campus for Clinton Global University), we had no such luck in getting her on. We ended with talking about the Kappa Kappa Gamma suspension and subsequent reversal announced earlier this week and the WHO’s recent advising on sugar. As always, catch a replay after the break. Keep it locked.

This week, we talked about the looming DHS shutdown and the immigration reform debate associated with it. We then moved to talking about Oklahoma’s recent ban on AP U.S. History. We finished with a debate on D.C.’s legalization (or grey-area therein) of marijuana. Throughout the show, we asked about the gold-and-white or black-and-blue dress that took the world by storm the day before, and we were happy to have a bit of fun at the end of the show debating which color set this particular article of clothing actually displayed. As always, catch the replay after the break; keep it locked.

This week, we started with discussing the conclusion of the Student Government elections and some of the proposals the campaigns posed to the student body, specifically: gender-neutral bathrooms and 24/7 dining options. We then moved to discussing the revelations that the NSA has been adding some undesired functions to hard drives and whether this is proper in modern society. We closed with the Mars One announcement of whittling down their candidate pool to a mere 100 potential future-Martians before wandering a bit into eco-policy and some other off-topic points, but it was still fun. Anyways, catch the replay after the break. Keep it locked.

This week, we were joined by Nicole D, who will be coming on to round out our political-spectrum coverage! As usual, we also had Kyle and Rachel on, and it looks like we’re done with adding people to the show for a little while. We talked about Net Neutrality, the Keystone XL pipeline, Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike), and Vaccinations. As always, catch a replay after the break. Keep it locked.
