Radiothon: One Hit Wonder Show Highlights

Every year, WVUM celebrates the beauty and legacy of the station during its big fundraising week, Radiothon! The week is meant to spread awareness about how the station impacts the lives and college experiences of the DJs and all of the loyal listeners of the station! One Hit Wonder shows greatly emphasize this passion as well, by allowing DJs to craft a one-time-only specialty show in which they can choose a genre or era of music to expand upon during their show! So we made it easy for you to tune in; a few of the DJs who will be spinning their specialized playlists this week are listed below with some information about their shows!

Alec:

What is your one hit wonder show?

  • A showcase of dream pop and Shoegaze songs from the late 80s and early 90s

What made you want to do this show?

  • I’ve really gotten into the Shoegaze genre lately, and i think it’s always had a strong influence as one of the cores of alt rock, especially modern indie. I guess it’s a good opportunity to flex my knowledge about this genre!

Which artists are you most excited to feature?

  • My bloody Valentine, the Cocteau Twins.

When is your show?

  • Friday 12am-2am.

Jacob:

What is your one hit wonder show?

  • I’m addressing the lo-fi meme elephant in the room! It’s very self-aware.

What made you want to do this show?

  • I feel like it’s gotten more popular, and a lot of newer musicians

  • I’ve seen it online as a really easy avenue for people to get into music, and there are people who enjoy it! And not all of it is bad, like there’s a lot of bad stuff out there, but there’s some clean piano/harp out songs, and I can f**k with it!

Which artists are you most excited to feature?

  • Temporex, Kevatta, and City Girl.

When is your show?

  • Tuesday 11pm-12am!

Caroline and Katie:

What is your one hit wonder show?

  • Our show is basically an appreciation for adolescents in the music industry and how they’re shifting what the alternative music scene looks like! It’s called “Coming of Age in the Digital Era,” so it’s meant to emphasize how these young people are dictating what people are listening to and how they can make an impact!

What made you want to do this show?

  • We think there’s a lot of young and local artists who really are defining where the music industry is going and what young people are listening to, and we wanted to showcase that.

Which artists are you most excited to feature?

  • Silver Sphere, Parking Lots, and The Polar Boys!

When is your show?

  • Sunday 10-11pm!

Nate:

What is your one hit wonder show?

  • “Indie Rock 101,” which will play essential 00s Indie!

What made you want to do this show?

  • I wanted to do this show because it’s the music that I listen to the most, and it’s the genre that really shaped my taste in music.

Which artists are you most excited to feature?

  • I’m really excited to play all of the artists, but I guess I’d have to say Wilco. I feel like they don’t get the same love as other 00s Indie music, plus the song of theirs I picked is one of my favorites ever.

When is your show?

  • Thursday morning from 8-10am!

Avery:

What is your one hit wonder show?

  • My show is focused on the rebirth of Garage Rock in the late 90s/early 00s featuring artists like The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.!

What made you want to do this show?

  • I chose to do it because i grew up listening to this kind of music, and especially now, a lot of these artists are coming back with new music and being headliners for festivals! So I think it would be cool to showcase their stuff. Also, being so close to New York, i always loved the musical history of the city, and showcasing a newer movement that came out of there is was really why I chose to have that playlist!

Which artists are you most excited to feature?

  • I’m definitely most excited to play The Strokes (being that they’re making a comeback right now), The Vines, and The Walkmen!

When is your show?

  • My show is Thursday morning from 5-7am!
