Music Director's Music Digest: March

Howdy y’all!

I’m sorry it’s been a while, school has really gotten the best of me lately. But, that also means I’ve been listening to a lot of new music on repeat as well as diving back into some of my old comforting favorites.

In times of extreme stress, there are always some favorites I return to time and time again, usually something to keep my mood a little more upbeat. If you maybe didn’t know before, R&B has been one of my favorite genres since childhood. So naturally some of my childhood favorites such as Erykah Badu and Jill Scott have been the anthems of my late nights spent studying. But, I am not one to shy away from those paving the way for what R&B is today such as my favorites Shay Lia, Rochelle Jordan, and Jamila Woods who all have come out with stellar albums in the past two years. Although not music from my childhood, it wouldn’t be a Katie playlist without George Clanton on there somewhere. And these few weeks have been a revisit to 100% electronica. Taking a completely different turn, to try to keep my eyes open while staring at the endless lines in autoCAD on my screen, Roisin Murphy has been the key to that success. With her incredible album “Roisin Machine” that came out last year, songs such as “Shellfish Mademoiselle” and “We Got Together” have maybe gotten me up and dancing in my room at 3 am rather than doing my work but hey at least it gets done somehow.

I would say that the sappy love song listening has stopped from the time you’ve last been reading one of these columns of mine but I’d be completely lying. Toledo released their newest album “Jockeys of Love” recently which has taken center stage of my Spotify listening habits. As well as Sharon Van Etten, Bedouine, Clairo (surprisingly enough, shoutout Caroline), and one of my newest favorites, Mute Swan. Something about all of those records have really been very healing to listen to during this time of my life!! Warning if you do listen to them though --- they will probably make you cry.

Anyways, probably what you really came here for, the new music. Other than those that I previously mentioned, new music so far this year has not been a disappointment. One of my most listened to songs (and that will most likely be on my spotify wrapped without a doubt) comes from Miami’s very own Folktale San Pedro with their newest release “Pseudo Life” which I cannot express enough my adoration for. Also!!! The new Smerz album cannot go unmentioned of course. The iconic Norwegian electronic duo is back and I’ve been looking forward to this moment for a very very long time. New singles from Alice Phoebe Lou, Lava La Rue, and Kero Kero Bonito also deserve a little highlight as well!!

Anyways, very jumbled playlist, very jumbled description, but better that then nothing I guess (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). Have fun! Have a listen! And I’ll be back again at some point.

Catch ya later,

Katie :)
